GOHBA: Ontario's Investment of $37.5M Underscores Commitment to Building More Homes in Ottawa
OTTAWA, April 5, 2024 – Today's provincial funding announcement of $37.5 million for the City of Ottawa underscores the Ontario government's dedication to supporting the construction of new housing supply and improving housing affordability in the region.
This funding, allocated through the Building Faster Fund, is a direct response to Ottawa's strides toward its 2023 target for new home construction. The Greater Ottawa Home Builders' Association (GOHBA) welcomes the positive impact that today’s announcement will have on the development of housing in the region.
“Ottawa faces a pressing need for enhanced infrastructure for housing to accommodate its growing population,” said Jason Burggraaf, GOHBA’s Executive Director. “Today's commitment lays a sturdy foundation to facilitate the construction of new homes, which will lead to a more vibrant, inclusive and sustainable Ottawa.”
While the full impact of these investments will be seen down the road, it’s critical to invest in infrastructure today in order to facilitate the construction of housing in the future. The city's potential for growth and intensification hinges on the adequacy of its supporting infrastructure. Therefore, ensuring the right infrastructure is in place for new housing becomes imperative, addressing a critical aspect of housing supply and affordability.
Today’s funding allocation, coupled with recent funding announcements from both the provincial and federal governments, signals a shared recognition of the collective benefits derived from enhancing housing infrastructure, particularly in intensification efforts, and supporting housing needs.
GOHBA eagerly anticipates the City's plans for utilizing this funding, alongside any funding to come through the Federal Budget for infrastructure and the recently-announced funding agreement between the Province and the City that will help achieve Ottawa’s housing goal of 151,000 new homes by 2032.
