GOHBA Statement on Residential Construction Restrictions

On April 3, the provincial government announced restrictions to residential construction and renovation activity – essentially ordering that current builds/projects could be finished, but no new ones could be started.

Members of the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) support the government’s move to combat COVID-19 while enabling the completion of already-started new homes and renovations.

An average of 500 to 600 families a month move into a new home in Ottawa. Most often, they are leaving a home that another family is moving into, or leaving an apartment that will be filled by someone else. Many don’t have alternative accommodation available if they aren’t able to move into these new homes.

In addition, there are 1000s of renovation projects across the city in various states of completion. All of these renovations improve and/or expand the livable space of someone’s home – something that’s precious now more than ever.

Members have stepped up health and safety protocols on site, and support increased inspection activity during this time. Sites that do not meet Ministry of Labour requirements and place everyone at risk should be shut down.

GOHBA members would like to especially acknowledge Ottawa’s Chief Building Official, Frank Bidin, and the entire Building Code Services department for their continued hard work and dedication to supporting the delivery of new homes during this difficult time.   

Protecting everyone on site – employees, trades, inspectors – is the number one priority for GOHBA members while they continue to deliver the keys to the families waiting for their homes.
